Azdavay İlçesi 12.02.1945 tarih ve 4869 sayılı Kanun ile ilçe statüsü kazanmış, 1 Nisan 1946 tarihinden itibaren bu fonksiyonunu yürütmeye başlamıştır. Bu tarihten önce Daday İlçesine bağlı bir bucak iken, mesafe uzaklığı ve ekonomik bağlılığın az oluşu nedeni ile ilçe olmuştur. İlçe tarihi hakkında yapılan arkeolojik kazılara göre; değişik zaman dilimlerinde Paflagonyalılar, Etiler, Lidyalılar, Helenler, Romalılar ve Bizanslar'ın istilasına uğramıştır. Candaroğulları zamanında Kastamonu Sancağına bağlı 36 kadılık'tan biri olarak idare edilmiş, 1460 yılında Fatih Sultan Mehmet'in Kastamonu'yu Osmanlı topraklarına katması ile Azdavay da Osmanlı ülkesine dahil edilmiştir. Azdavay Osmanlılar zamanında Daday'a bağlı kadılık olarak görülmektedir. Daday 1868 yılında Kastamonu'ya bağlı ilçe haline geldiğinde Azdavay Daday İlçesine bağlı bir nahiye haline gelmiştir. Osmanlılardan günümüze ulaşan bir tarihi eser yoktur.1868 yılında Daday Kastamonu'ya bağlı bir ilçe durumuna getirildiğinde 20 evde 233 kişinin yaşadığı Azdavay'ında Daday'a bağlı bir bucak olduğunu görüyoruz. Aynı yönetim Cumhuriyetin kuruluşundan sonrada yürütülmüştür. 4869 sayılı yasa ile 01.14.1946 tarihinde ilçe olmuştur.Daha sonra Azdavay'a bağlı 26 köy bir kanunla Azdavay'dan ayrılmış ve 1988 yılında Pınarbaşı ilçe durumuna getirilmiştir. Böylelikle o zaman 54 köyü olan Azdavay'ın köy ve nüfus sayısı azalmıştır. Doğu komşumuz olan Ağlı' nın da ilçe yapılmasıyla Azdavay'ın köy sayısı 48'e kadar düşmüştür.Hızlı bir göçün olduğu ilçemizde nüfusun daha da azalacağı görülmektedir.
Azdavay adının nereden geldiğine dair bir somut bilgi yoktur. Bir rivayete göre Azdavay ismi "Türkler azdı vay" dan, daha sonra Azdavay olarak değişerek günümüze kadar gelmiştir.  RSS Button Maker/Generator Tool
